We’ve noticed that word is really getting around about latex mattresses. Even though latex mattresses have been on the market for many decades already, more and more consumers are discovering the benefits of these incredible mattresses.

If you don’t know much about latex mattresses, let us be the first to fill you in on some of the basic facts. First, there are two main types of processes that take the naturally occurring latex and turn them into dreamy mattresses: Talalay and Dunlop. While each are popular among consumers, we believe there is a noticeable difference in the quality they produce.

The Dunlop process was the first method invented. It was perfected in the beginning of the twentieth century and the first to be used in the manufacturing of beds.

During World War II, the Talalay brothers came up with their own process, one that is more complex and costly. The Talalay method takes about four times as long from start to finish and adds two important extra steps. The result, however is a superior and unmatched latex mattress. It’s these extra steps—vacuuming and flash freezing—that elevate the Talalay process.

Both the Talalay and Dunlop processes begin the same way. The latex is gathered from the rubber tree and poured into a mold. The extra vacuum step in the Talalay process, however, distributes the latex evenly and allows for a better consistency overall.

Flash freezing also improves the quality and consistency of Talalay latex mattresses. Since liquid latex is a suspension of rubber particles in water, flash freezing captures the particles where they are, as opposed to allowing them to sink to the bottom. This means that Talalay latex mattresses are a consistent density top to bottom and side to side. Without this the flash freezing step, there is variation in the mattress consistency.

The Talalay process also allows manufacturers to produce variation in how firm or plush a mattress can be. On the other hand in the Dunlop process, the latex is poured onto a conveyer belt and the same dense latex is produced every time.

One of the great things about Talalay latex mattresses is that they are both supportive and responsive to a person’s body while they sleep. No matter a person’s weight or body shape, they will wake up feeling that the pressure points like hips and shoulders have been supported while they slept.

We think that Talalay latex mattresses are an incredible invention. They are buoyant and airy, while remaining supportive. While word is starting to spread about the benefits of these mattresses, latex mattresses are still one of the industry’s best kept secrets. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The more the merrier, we say—we truly love seeing people discover the brilliance of Talalay latex mattresses.
